Episode
[00:00:29] Sam Laura Brown: So we are here for part three of this series on how to create momentum in your business. I hope you’ve been enjoying it so far. I definitely have. So we have covered being behind versus having momentum in your business. What the difference is, why having momentum is a cure to being behind and feeling behind and just feeling like all of your hard work is never going to pay off.
[00:00:53] So that’s why this is so important. And also In that we talked about how having momentum in your business, it doesn’t burn you out. What burns you out is standing still, procrastinating, indecision. That’s what burns you out. Never switching off because you have no momentum, because your business can’t actually keep going when you’re not there.
[00:01:15] And that when you have momentum, it’s so much easier to navigate. Because your business doesn’t need you to be there every day because you have momentum. So that’s what allowed me to have weeks at a time off, like when I was in the first trimester with my daughter Lydia, also with my twins as well. And then maternity leaves, laptop free vacations, that’s what’s possible when you have momentum.
[00:01:37] If you don’t have momentum, You are going to have to put in so much work to your business because it will be at a standstill and it will not be able to function without you. So I really want to teach you how to create momentum. In the second part of this series, I talked about the importance of treating your business like a real business, of getting out of that hobby mentality.
[00:01:58] That, you know, you’ll invest more in the business than yourself and you’ll show up more and you won’t just keep squeezing it in once it’s actually real. You need to lead the way. You need to start prioritizing your business and that doesn’t mean it has to take much time. I’m going to talk about that more in this episode today, but actually if a friend or family member says, Hey, are you free to catch up?
[00:02:18] If you have plans to work on your business, no, sorry, I have plans. Being able to say that I know it’s, it’s hard for people pleases who we perfectionists. We just that people pleasing. So that is something that really stops us from creating momentum. So you want to be able to show up consistently for your business.
[00:02:36] Doesn’t have to be every day, but be showing up to be treating your business with respect to not just be choosing what you work on based on what you would be working on. If it was a hobby. Also, I didn’t even mention in that episode, I really started my business as a hobby, as a personal outlet. And I did have the hope that one day it could be business because I’d learned about blogging through business podcasts.
[00:02:57] So I knew what could be possible, but that felt so far away. It really was a hobby for me to have my blog, but I had to switch into that mindset of I’m actually going to treat this like a business. I’m actually going to take this seriously. I’m actually going to. Really show up for this and not just in the areas where I’m comfortable And the way that I would if it was a hobby I’m gonna learn how to sell i’m gonna get out of my own way to do that because the biggest block for me For selling was perfectionism It was the perfectionism that had me not want to create anything for sale for fear of disappointing anyone For fear of not helping people for fear of the criticism that could come for fear of being salesy Like there was so much perfectionism You That came with the selling.
[00:03:45] We coach on this all the time in PGSD that I had to do that work on the perfectionism around selling. Also learning the skills of selling and marketing and so many different things. So that only happened once I started treating my business like a real business. So today I want to talk to you about three simple steps to creating momentum in your business and specifically what this looks like.
[00:04:10] And so this is what you’re going to be guided through inside Perfectionists Getting Shit Done, which is my productivity program for perfectionist entrepreneurs. If you can relate to anything I’ve been talking about.
[00:04:20] It has already helped so many people, over a thousand people have been through the program, and been able to start getting shit done, to stop procrastinating, to stop overthinking, to stop being scared of what other people think, and to actually do it in a way that works. For you as a perfectionist. And I used to have like a fear of judgment, particularly was like, Oh, I didn’t tell anyone in my real life about my blog for a year.
[00:04:46] I was so scared of being laughed at. I just thought like, who the hell do I think I am? It was such a big thing for me. And. Oh, like I just want to help you. If you are struggling to make decisions, if you’re struggling to put yourself out there, if you know what to do, but you’re not doing it, get yourself inside PGSE, we’re going to be open on the 18th for one week only.
[00:05:06] And then this is going to be our last enrollment for the year. And we’re doing something really special for the remainder of this year inside PGSE that we’re doing as a bonus. So it’s related to momentum. and creating momentum before the end of the year, so that when you get to 2025, you’re not at a standstill.
[00:05:22] You’re not frozen anymore. You have that momentum that you can ride into the new year. So, so excited for that for everyone. Okay. So when it comes to creating momentum in your business, let’s talk about what that actually looks like and the strategies for creating momentum in your business. So the first is to make decisions and this is something that is such a tricky point for perfectionists because we really want to make good decisions.
[00:05:51] Decisions that we love, decisions that we’re happy with, decisions that we’re proud of, that we’re happy for others to see. It feels so important and it is so important. Making decisions, making great decisions in business is really important. But there’s a way to approach decision making like a perfectionist that has us putting a lot of pressure on decisions and therefore either being really indecisive or jumping from decision to decision to decision like if you make a decision but then you second guess it and then you go and ask someone and then if you’re just in that loop of second guessing or you’re not making any decisions at all then this is something that is really really really important for you to be actually learning how to do is to make decisions In a way that actually allows you to move yourself forward.
[00:06:39] So inside Perfectionists Getting Shit Done. I’m going to be teaching you my decision making framework because I do think it’s so important to like, if you want to have a business that you love, that feels aligned, that you’re actually happy with, that it’s not just like, just make these imperfect decisions and just like keep yourself moving and like, It is so powerful to be able to be like, I’m really happy with this decision that I’ve made.
[00:07:02] So I’m going to teach you how to make decisions that you’re happy with, that you love, and that can actually move you forward. So before making decisions, if you are not in a place where you can make decisions confidently without it taking too much time. So I’d say ideally, I mean, it depends on the kind of business decision it is, but if you’re spending more than a month Making the decision that is too long, especially if you’re in the early stages.
[00:07:27] So it’s really important to, and this is just a side note, but if you are comparing, if you’re at less than six figures in your business and you are comparing how you make decisions with people who are making multiple six figures, seven figures, eight figures in their business, they will be making decisions in a different way.
[00:07:46] And they will typically take a bit longer to make some decisions because they are at a different stage of business. So if you aren’t yet making a full time income from your business, or if you aren’t yet making 100, 000 a year from your business, you will want to have a bias towards action over a bias towards thoughtfulness.
[00:08:06] And this doesn’t mean you’re not going to be thoughtful, but it means that you can’t afford to wait two years to make a decision. And especially if you think about it in this way, Someone has an eight figure business. They’re making 10 million a year or more. They are more skilled in decision making and considering very different things in that time.
[00:08:25] They’re not just procrastinating on it out of fear and doubt and wanting to get it just right. And so what we want to do, and this is a very important part of building the business, Is that you need to feel confident making decisions and moving yourself forward and taking action So before you’re able to make decisions if you don’t have this skill You will feel stuck.
[00:08:43] You will find yourself spinning your wheels. You will find yourself burning yourself out Like I love to call this indecision fatigue where you are so fatigued by the indecision And you might spend so many sessions brainstorming, you’re watching YouTube videos, you’re listening to podcast episodes, you’re watching webinars, like you’re just trying to do all the things you can to try and make this perfect decision.
[00:09:04] And what it creates is you being stuck and behind, and you’re behind because you don’t have momentum, because you’re not taking action. So you end up as well losing so much confidence. And maybe if you start with very little confidence, then you end up with like nothing at all, because you’re so stuck.
[00:09:21] And this happens often for Perfectionist, if it’s before like the launch of an app, a podcast, a new venture, a new social platform, like it can really come up then. Or if you’re at a juncture in your business where you have been showing up one way and then you’re like, actually need to create a new name for something, or I actually need to rebrand this, that any kind of pivoting as well can really bring up for perfectionists.
[00:09:46] This fear of making the wrong decision. Fear of making a mistake, fear of being wrong. With our perfectionist mindset, we make ourselves wrong so easily. We spot imperfection and flaws so easily. And if you’re already feeling a lot of shame, then it feels so uncomfortable to have any more of it on. So we just try to not make any decision at all, or just find something else to be busy with and have a reason like, Oh, you know, I can tinker on this and tinker on that in the meantime.
[00:10:12] But as I said in the last episode. When you are treating your business like a real business, especially if you’re in the early stages, that means making decisions and moving yourself forward. So if you’re not doing that, you’re just going to be stuck, frustrated, and just feeling incapable when you’re not actually incapable.
[00:10:30] And if you do make decisions, and I will teach you the decision making framework we have in PGSD. I’m actually going to be teaching this live. So excited. But I will teach you my decision making framework that applies specifically to you. If you are making less than six figures in your business, or you’re not yet full time.
[00:10:47] In your business and making that full time income my decision making process so that you feel clear So that you feel happy you don’t feel reckless with your decision. You don’t feel like okay Well, this is a sub part of decision, but I guess I can move on like you will actually feel Happy with your decision and clear and confident and you’ll be able to move yourself forward And inside PGSD this has been such a big thing that has helped so many of our PGSDers Who come in and they’ve just been so stuck with a couple of decisions around typically, and I’ve said these examples many times because they’re the most common ones I see, niche, target market, naming a product or a service or a podcast, which platform to be on.
[00:11:29] Is it YouTube? Is it TikTok? Is it LinkedIn? Is it Instagram? those decisions that they have been so stuck with and they learned how to make decisions and they’re actually able to move themselves forward and very quickly create momentum. Very, very quickly. And it’s because of that ability to make decisions and learning how to do that as a perfectionist, especially the way you need to approach it.
[00:11:52] If you’re in the early stages of your business, the second thing that you need to be doing. is prioritize working on your business without it having to take much time. So I talked about this too in the last episode a little bit, but I just really want to underline this, that you can’t create momentum if your business is the lowest priority.
[00:12:13] It’s just not going to happen. And. I wish, I mean I don’t even know if I wish I could teach you how to do that because I think it’s a really important part of becoming a business owner is seeing the importance in your business and that doesn’t mean that your friends and family aren’t important, that doesn’t mean your kids aren’t important, that doesn’t mean your dog isn’t important and this is one way we can be in the all or nothing mindset like well making money isn’t everything or business isn’t everything so then I shouldn’t prioritize it but like if you’re anything like me and I talked about this For me, having a business wasn’t just about having freedom.
[00:12:47] in terms of location and time, though I love those things. I love that so much about my business, but for me it was freedom to be myself, freedom to actually be doing something I wanted to do, not just something that I was expected by society to do, that I was smart, I did well in school, so I have a law degree and a finance degree because that sounds smart to do that, but I When I was studying that, I was like, I don’t actually want to be a lawyer.
[00:13:10] I don’t like arguing with people. And I like finance, but I just, I’m not that interested in it. But give me a personal development book and I cannot put it down. And I want that to be what I spend my time on professionally. And so when I had that shift of like, I’m actually not just going to squeeze it in anymore around everything else and everyone else’s requests, but I’m going to actually prioritize it.
[00:13:36] And so what I want to teach you about, and we’re going to be focusing on this as well in PGSD, is momentum time. So these are four one hour blocks, and your power planning is really going to support you with following through with the things that you plan to do, and if you need extra support with waking up early so you can get it done, things like that, we will give you the full support with that as well.
[00:13:56] But you’re going to have four one hour blocks of time, Each week that you are working on your momentum project. So I’ll talk about that in a second In the third thing, but you’re going to have four one hour blocks. This is your momentum time That’s all it takes. It doesn’t take you having to work, like, wake up early, work for three hours, go to your full time job, get home, don’t say hi to anyone, go into your office, work six hours, like, sleep for four hours, do it again.
[00:14:25] That’s not what it takes, and so many people who do that, not only do they get completely burned out, but they’re spending so much time working on things that don’t matter, because they haven’t got the clarity they need. to be able to use that time wisely. So I’m going to teach you about that as well inside PGSE, but you want to be just knowing that it’s a matter of having a very confined, constrained amount of time.
[00:14:47] Not that, and as well, I’ve got to mention this here, this doesn’t mean, okay, now I have to use that time perfectly because I don’t have much time. And so all of that, and you can choose to have that time before I was on a Saturday, for example, or the weekend, or it can be four hours on like four days of the week before you go to work, Or in the evening, it can be a mix, but just having four one hour blocks together or separately, And I’ll teach you how to have it be this way, but it really relieves the pressure to actually use the time perfectly, because you’ll know that you’re using it well, because there are four things that you want to be doing in your momentum time.
[00:15:25] And I’ll be teaching you about this in PGSD. So definitely get yourself inside. But in that momentum time, You’re actually going to be able to be building your identity as a business owner and as the thing that you’re doing. Whether it’s a coach like me, you’re an artist, you’re a writer, you’re going to be creating such a strong foundation for yourself and you’re going to be doing the things that will actually move your business forward.
[00:15:46] You’re going to be doing the needle movers that are actually going to have you creating the compound effect, creating that momentum. Versus you could be the person who wakes up early, works three hours on your business, goes to work, then like neglects everything else in their life and works through all the evening.
[00:16:03] And there’s no problem with that. But most perfectionist what will happen is that they will spend all that time like polishing a sales page that isn’t actually the thing that needs to be worked on. Like it’s just so easy to spend time on the wrong thing. So anyway, Okay. If you don’t have momentum time What you’ll be finding is that As mentioned you’ll be trying to squeeze work in Business in wherever and whenever you can it’ll always be on your mind And you’ll never be able to switch it off But then when the time comes to actually work on your business, you won’t be able to use it Well, like you’ll know you’ll have that feeling like i’m not using this time efficiently and you’ll find yourself doing things like Checking email or checking social media or just like kind of like working on your business, but not actually You moving your business forward.
[00:16:46] You’ll just be doing business related activities instead of building your business. And also, you’ll be saying yes to anyone else’s requests. Because of that people pleasing, you’ll be like, oh, I don’t have any other plans, even though you do. You will just be completely deprioritizing your business. And even though you’re thinking about it all the time and that means your business won’t actually be able to have momentum and to be something that can support you full time.
[00:17:14] When you have the momentum time, when you are actually able to have that time and I’ll teach you as well with power planning and planning properly as a perfectionist and how to follow through, how to actually follow through with that time. I know that could be another thing like, well, yeah, I can plan it out, but I’m not going to follow you through.
[00:17:28] I’ve got you. Oh my God. I have got you so good when it comes to following through with your plans. I am a master in teaching perfectionists who procrastinate and put things off and overthink and struggle to follow through. Cause that was me. I have taught so many perfectionist entrepreneurs how to follow through with their plans.
[00:17:45] I’m so confident that inside PGSD, you can come in, you can be someone who doesn’t look at your calendar. You forget to look. you sleeping in the morning, excuse your alarm, like all of that. I am so confident. I know how exactly how to teach you. I, I just know it so well, how to teach you how to be someone who follows through with that momentum time.
[00:18:07] So I’ve got you on that. If you are worried that you’re not actually going to be able to do it, I have got you. So you want to make sure with this momentum time as well, that you are planning out a time that works for you. And that might look very different to everyone else. So for me, for example, I really wanted to work on my business before I did something for my boss.
[00:18:27] When I was at my accounting job and like that first stage where I was really like, okay, I’m going to treat it like a real business. And like my first shift into that was in 2016 in April. I’m going to treat this like a real business and I’m going to I really would just want to work on my business and do something for myself before I do something for my boss.
[00:18:47] So for me that meant waking up early and working on my business, but that might not be the best thing for you. That might not be the best thing for you. You might have a much better time doing it at a different time of day. Not everyone needs to be a morning person.
[00:19:01] And I know there are so many things out there of like successful entrepreneurs have this morning routine. They wake up at 5am, they do a workout while everyone else is sleeping, and they’ve already finished all their work before everyone else even wakes up. This doesn’t have to be you. So many of our PGSDers, that is not them.
[00:19:17] They want to have a slow morning. They want to do it at a different time of day. So you’re power planning as well. We’ll actually teach you exactly when the best time of day is for you. So you don’t have to force yourself to do it in the morning if that isn’t when you want to do it or isn’t when it makes sense.
[00:19:30] Also, I want to mention too with your momentum time, like I did a lot of that time on the train when I had a 30 minute commute into my job in the city at the accounting firm and I did a lot of that momentum time. on the train. So that’s totally an option you can figure out as well. We’ll teach you this in PGSE how to do it while commuting.
[00:19:50] But after you have this momentum time, you’ll be able to actually move your business forward and do the things you need to do. Make the decisions, take the action. You’ll have that feeling of progress. Which means your business will be less reliant on you to be there all the time because it actually has momentum to carry it forward.
[00:20:09] And you’ll really be able to, and I think this is like just such an important thing, to be able to mentally switch off. You won’t feel like you’re behind before you even wake up in the morning, like before you even open your eyes, like, Oh my God, there’s so much to do. And like, I don’t even know if I’m going to get it done.
[00:20:25] And just feeling like you’re spending the whole day working against yourself. And then, okay, I didn’t do it this morning. So I’ll do it after work today. And then you don’t do it after work because you’re too tired. So I’ll do it tomorrow morning. Then you snooze your alarm and like that whole thing, not being able to just mentally switch off to be like, I plan to do this.
[00:20:41] I did it. I’m moving my business forward. Even if I can’t see it right now, I know this is compounding. I’ll teach you how to choose exactly what to do so that you know that for certain. This is going to compound into what I want and I got a complete and I know exactly when I’m getting my clean rest, which is guilt free rest time that you’re not working on the business.
[00:21:02] I know when it is work time and when it isn’t for my business. That’s part of treating it like a real business Is having business time and non business time clearly defined and your power planning is really going to help you with that So having that definition so that you’re not always thinking about it, but never actually doing it That’s the worst place to be And so many perfectious entrepreneurs get stuck there that you’re always thinking about your business But you’re not actually doing your business And you’re not doing the things that will create a business and you just end up with this hobby business And feeling so incapable when you’re not incapable.
[00:21:35] So This is a big thing The momentum time. Number three is completing a simple project that creates momentum. So I’m calling this a momentum project and inside PGSD, we’re going to be creating these and completing these together before the year ends. So a momentum project is really powerful. And this is really how I grew my business and created so much momentum without having to be consistent and showing up every day.
[00:22:05] So what can happen is that When we’re in this mindset of like, just thinking on a weekly basis, and like, I need to post this many times on social media, like I need to do this many things this week to be able to build my business, that we miss actually doing really important things that need to be done.
[00:22:21] And we just kind of feel like we’re on this hamster wheel. And also then it feels really hard to take a break because you have this weekly criteria or monthly, but typically it’s weekly criteria of here are the things I need to do. Typically X number of posts on social media and things like that. I need to go live or whatever it is.
[00:22:41] And when you have a momentum project that is outcome based, it doesn’t have to make money. It doesn’t have to be a financial thing. It can be something that just helps you build your confidence.
[00:22:54] Maybe if you’re a coach like me, it’s a project that really helps you create your confidence as a coach, even if you’re not getting paid to coach yet. Maybe if you’re an artist and you have been putting off a certain art project for a while, it’s a momentum project that helps you to actually create that.
[00:23:09] And the big thing here, and I won’t go into it too much here, I’m going to teach you all of this inside PGSE, but the big thing too, with your momentum project is that it’s clearly defined again, it could be financially based, but it doesn’t have to be. It depends on where you’re at in your business and what you’re wanting to work on.
[00:23:26] It’s going to help you like really develop your identity and self image around the thing that you do, whether you’re an artist, a writer, a photographer, a real estate agent, a performer, whatever it is you’re doing, it’s really going to support you with that. So your imposter syndrome will decrease. Your confidence will increase and it’s going to be something that you will actually be able to complete and that we’re going to set it up.
[00:23:50] I’ll teach you exactly how to do this. We’re going to set it up in a way that it’s going to be easy to complete it. So for example, if you’re the artist that instead of having to create one perfect art piece, By that six week period, we’re going to set up in a way so you actually, and this will be the approach, will be having a higher volume of creation so you can decrease pressure.
[00:24:15] I like to call it a low pressure creation plan so that you can actually create what it is you need to create without feeling the pressure that whatever you create has to be perfect. This is such a big thing to you with whether it’s an online course that you want to launch a podcast, you want to get started on YouTube, you want to write a short story or just have a daily writing practice, like whatever it is that you want to have as your momentum project.
[00:24:40] When we are in this mindset that every piece of work we do towards it has to be perfect or we’ll never get there, which is that like really thinking about momentum, just being this fragile thing when really it’s not. So we want to have you focus on higher volume. Lower pressure and really just having it be low stakes and having it also be set up in a way that then doesn’t have you feeling sloppy or reckless or like you’re not doing a good job because that is something that is important to you.
[00:25:09] You want to feel proud of your work. You want to feel proud of what you’re putting out there into the world. You want to feel like you’re doing a good job. You want your potential to actually be showing through. And so what we’re going to do is have you set up this momentum project inside PGSD in a way that actually supports you to get it complete.
[00:25:28] You’re going to use power planning as well and clean rest to be able to complete it in a sustainable way using your momentum time as well. And you’ll have my decision making framework. So if there are any decisions that are stopping you from knowing which direction you want to create momentum in, you will actually be able to confidently create momentum.
[00:25:47] Even if there are other things that you would like to have a little bit more perfect, you will feel happy with your decisions and be able to move yourself forward and have this project. Or maybe the project is going to be deciding on the name, deciding on the niche, deciding on the target market, deciding on the product.
[00:26:04] That’s an option too. It’s so powerful to have your momentum project if you have been really stuck on a decision to have the project itself being having that decision made and beginning to execute on that decision. So again, it doesn’t have to be financial. It’s really about helping you build that identity that you want to be having around whatever it is you actually do for your business and being a business owner as well and having you have a project that supports you to create whatever it is you’re creating or supports you to decide.
[00:26:37] In a low pressure way so you can actually get it done and so you can get to christmas You can get to the new year be in such a good place I’m, just so excited for everyone who’s going to be doing this And really like before having if you don’t have a momentum project You’re just gonna feel like you’re on a hamster wheel.
[00:26:55] You’re just gonna feel Like you have to show up every single day and you should feel guilty whenever you’re resting. And also if you’re not doing every single post perfectly or every single email, whatever it is you’re doing, if you’re not doing every little element perfectly that it’s never going to work out.
[00:27:11] And that’s a really tough place to be. It is not fun to be in business where you feel like every little move you make is make or break. When you have a momentum project, you have a very clear place to put your energy in your momentum time. It’s something that you actually want to do. That’s a key thing about your momentum project.
[00:27:31] It’s not what you should be, not what the experts say you have to be doing. What do you want to do? What would you actually be excited to do, to complete? What is that thing that you’re like, I would actually love to do that, I have a bit of resistance around it, I’ve been wanting to do that for ages and I haven’t been able to, but I’d really love to do that.
[00:27:50] And we’re going to turn it into a six week momentum project, you’re going to learn about power planning to implement that and actually follow through with that. You’re going to learn about clean rest. You’re going to learn about aligned marketing if your momentum project is marketing related. So if you are fuzzy on any aspects of your marketing plan, you get that all cleaned up too.
[00:28:11] I love teaching that. So having that momentum project. Is really as well as I said how I’ve built my business that when I broke things down into projects instead of just thinking weekly I was able to move forward even when There were times that my perfectionism handbrake just came on so hard and I couldn’t show up For a week for a few weeks or I had something going on in my life just having a clear project to work on So I can clearly define meant as well, instead of feeling like if you feel like there’s never enough time to get everything done and you’re never doing enough, even though you’re doing a lot, it’s because you don’t have somewhere to focus.
[00:28:51] And if you are focused on something and you still feel like that, it’s because you don’t actually believe in what you’re focusing on. It’s not a momentum project for you. So in PGSE, I’m going to teach you how to create your momentum project, how to create your momentum time in your week and use power planning to support you to follow through with that and also my decision making framework and you get as well have the option for lots of feedback, support, coaching on any decisions you need to make on anything related to anything that I’ve talked about.
[00:29:20] But we give you so much accountability, so much support, like it is such, such a safe place to be without judgment, without shame, we don’t rush you, we give you a loving kick in the pants if you’re ready for it, if you show the signs that you’re ready for it, but we give you the best support inside PGS team.
[00:29:40] to help you create momentum that you can sustain. It’s not going to burn you out. It’s not going to take like, Oh my God, I just wish everyone listening to this, this is just what I want to make sure you know, having momentum takes less energy than not having momentum. A body in motion stays in motion and not just like you’re busy hustling, doing things.
[00:30:02] As I’ve talked about, you have a lot of rest, but if you think about your business being the body in motion, It’s not you that has to be there because it’s the body in motion and it stays in motion. If it’s not in motion, you have to be there to push the business along and push and push and push. But if the business is in motion because you have a momentum project and that momentum time each week and you’ve made decisions you’re happy with, so you’re now not afraid of creating momentum, you don’t have that resistance or hesitancy to create momentum, amazing things happen.
[00:30:38] When that’s the case, I just, I’ve just, I’m so excited. So when you have this, you are able to have that business that will become a full time business. Maybe that feels close depending where you are. Maybe that feels so far away, but you are creating with your momentum project and momentum time and making decisions you’re happy with and you can move yourself forward and not be stuck in the overthinking.
[00:31:03] you’re able to create a business that can support you. I just think about like if I hadn’t created momentum and I hadn’t learned how to do that as a perfectionist and how to stop triggering my perfectionist mindset, but how to actually, even though I had such a hard time showing up consistently, but I figured out a way like, Oh, if I just do these projects and I have this specific time that I’m working on it, And I’m really clear about certain things, including my decisions.
[00:31:32] It’s okay if I really struggled to post consistently on Instagram. And if you scroll back to my Instagram, that’s what you’ll see that I haven’t posted consistently on Instagram, but I’ve still had a really successful business because of this approach. And I just think as a mom as well, because that’s something in this phase of life, it’s so important to me that I would be going into my nine to five accounting job.
[00:31:56] I’d be seeing them. For a little bit in the morning, a little bit in the evening, just on weekends, trying to cram in everything on the weekends. I’d probably be exhausted cause I’m doing something I don’t even like with my life. And I get to be an example of so many things for them. So many things, but also I just get to spend so much time with them.
[00:32:20] I get to have freedom over how much time I have with them. I get to choose that and because I treat my business like a real business as well. They go to daycare so I can work on certain days of the week. I’m not saying to do that, you have to send your kids to daycare. But if I was in a job, I would send them to daycare.
[00:32:40] And so that’s the case for me with my business. It looks different for everyone, but I treat my business seriously. And it affords me the same respect. It treats me seriously. It takes care of me. And it’s meant that I’m able to have so much freedom. There’s so much possibility now for our family. That wasn’t the case before.
[00:32:59] If I’d been still in the accounting job or still in the receptionist job, which I didn’t hate either of those. I was never the person who was like, I can’t work for a nine to five job. Like I was happy enough there, but I just didn’t feel like I had the freedom to be myself and I didn’t have control of my time.
[00:33:14] I had to work certain hours. I had to do certain things that I didn’t want to do, that I didn’t even feel good at, that I didn’t like, I had to be someone I didn’t want to be, to be able to be successful, and I just am able to show my kids what it looks like to have something you do that you love, to be brave enough to go all in on it, even when it doesn’t look like it’s working yet, and to have that payoff.
[00:33:39] And I’m just, I’m so grateful for that. I’m so grateful for past me, who had no momentum, and then past times I’ve had momentum, and then it’s gone down a bit, and then I’ve needed to regather it. I’m so grateful for me, for past me, who did that, and was willing to show up and take action, even if it was uncomfortable and a little scary.
[00:34:01] Because I am now reaping the rewards of that. And I want that to be the case for you too. I never thought, I just, the thought of having a full time business just felt so impossibly far away. And the fact that at the time of recording this, I’ve been comfortably full time in my business for five years, two maternity leaves.
[00:34:20] I’ve decreased my work days to three days a week for like three years now. I love what I do. I get to work with the best people. I get to talk about something I’m endlessly passionate about. for that. Like reading personal development books counts as part of my job. Like that, I am living the dream and I was the person who from the outside, it looked like I’d never have the resilience to have a business or the confidence.
[00:34:45] So I know it’s possible for you too. So with that said, I will talk to you in the next episode on how to create momentum without burning yourself out. I’ll talk to you then.
