Sam Laura Brown – (Start of episode)
[00:00:29] Today I want to talk to you about the difference between self-doubt selling and self-trust selling. So these are two different methods for selling when it comes to your business. And what happens for perfectionists is that we unintentionally fall into self-doubt selling. We are selling from a place of self-doubt.
[00:00:51] We are constantly questioning trying to get clear, trying to figure it out, trying to get it right, not trusting ourselves to know the answer, not trusting ourselves to be able to figure it out, needing to be told what to do by someone else, needing to be told how we should be posting, how we should be writing, how we should be recording, what we should be doing to tick all the boxes, and in the process not then being able to be coming across as or experiencing being fully committed, fully convicted, fully in service when we are selling.
[00:01:27] So what will happen is if you are in self-doubt selling, and that is what you’re doing, not because there’s something wrong with you, but simply because if your perfectionism handbrake is on when it comes to selling. That is how you will be selling. That is how it manifests. When that is happening, it will be so hard to make sales and you will be feeling salesy while you’re doing it.
[00:01:52] You will be feeling like you’re forcing yourself to do something that you don’t even really like and that you didn’t even start a business for your love of marketing and sales. You wish you could just outsource it and you dream about one day, like someone else can do the marketing for me. Someone else can do the sales for me and I can just do the bits that I’m good at, which.
[00:02:09] Aren’t those two things? And what happens is it takes you so much time. So, so, so much time to get anything done. Like it’ll take you an hour to create an Instagram post. Half the time you don’t even end up posting it. You just end up distracting yourself with something on the backend of your business that you need to do.
[00:02:30] Or maybe when you’re on Instagram, then you see something else and you’re like, Oh, maybe I should do that. Like that person, you get lost down this market research rabbit hole and trying to see like. This person does it that way. And this person does it that way. So maybe if I do it more like that, then I would have more sales.
[00:02:45] And then you try and figure out like reverse engineering what everyone else is doing and what you see them selling like, and trying to have that be how you’re selling. So you can finally get it right. So you can finally make more sales and not be stressed about money and not feel like you’re failing and not feel like you’re behind, but actually be hitting your sales goals and your financial goals.
[00:03:06] for your business and feeling like this business that I’m going after and pursuing, I’ve made the right decision here. Like I’m actually happy that I left my job or that I am taking time away from my friends and family to be spending on this business because I’ve actually made a good decision here. It is financially paying off.
[00:03:25] I’m going to be able to support my family. I’m going to be able to support myself. I’m going to be able to have more time and more freedom from having this business. And so I really just want to talk to you about. The difference between what I’ve just described, which is self-doubt selling, very common, speaking from experience here, speaking from experience, the self-doubt selling, and then what it looks like to instead be in self-trust selling and why this is a really, really, really powerful shift to make.
[00:03:58] And that it’s a little more than like, Oh, I should just trust myself. And you should just trust yourself. It’s actually becoming the person. Who is able to make decisions, who is able to get themselves to clarity, who is able to do it differently to everyone else without making themselves wrong for that, who is able to have poor sales results sometimes and not make that mean anything about themselves so they can just bounce back and get back on track and it just be a little blip versus that becoming a new trend that when you have a sales event where you’re like, Whether it’s a campaign, whether it’s a launch, whether it’s just an email sequence, whatever that looks like for you in your business.
[00:04:37] If you have a bad result, which is going to happen. If you’re an entrepreneur from time to time, that’s going to happen. You’re going to be trying new things, putting yourself out there, innovating, like that’s going to happen. But how do you respond to that? When you’re self-doubt selling. And your perfectionism handbrake is on.
[00:04:54] You were going to be like, okay, maybe the price is too high. Maybe I need to change what I’m selling. Maybe the sales page needs to be updated. Maybe I sent too many emails. I shouldn’t bother people next time. All those different things versus being like, Oh yeah, this is normal. It’s just part of business.
[00:05:09] And I’m just going to figure out what happened. I’m going to do a sales debrief. I’m going to figure out what happened. I’m going to keep on going. I’m going to keep doing what’s working because some things did work, even though I didn’t get a great result. I’m going to stop doing the things that didn’t work.
[00:05:22] I know exactly what those things are. I’m going to pick myself back up. I’m going to give it another go. No time and energy lost to the shame spiral that full perfection is can last so many weeks, sometimes even months. And so when you were in that self-trust selling, you were able to not just like, it’s not this place of, I trust myself to always achieve my goals.
[00:05:47] It’s I trust myself to also be okay when I don’t achieve my goals, to also be okay when I don’t achieve my goals. And that creates so much freedom to actually explore and be more playful in your business and have more fun and to have ideas and to try them. But if you’re like, I trust myself to always be succeeding.
[00:06:09] that’s just not the reality of business that you’re going to be able to do that. No one is able to do that unless you don’t try anything at all. And you only do things that are guaranteed to succeed. So ultimately, while you might be successful, successful in that sense, you aren’t successful or as successful as you could be overall, because you’re really limiting what you could be doing and playing small because you only want to do things that are guaranteed to work, that you’re going to feel good at while you’re doing them.
[00:06:34] And after doing them, So anyway, I just hope by talking this out a bit and sharing about it with you, I’m going to show some more specific examples of what it looks like to be in self-doubt selling versus self-trust selling. But I hope this just helps for you as well. Like the reason I wanted to do this episode and I’m going to be working with people one on one.
[00:06:54] We’ve already had people start signing up, but working with people one on one. to help you make this shift from self-doubt selling to self-trust selling both from a mindset perspective and also from a strategic perspective. This is really about a mix of mindset and strategy so that you’re not just like, I trust myself.
[00:07:13] And then you’re trusting yourself to do something that makes zero sense and just hoping and praying it will work. That’s not what we’re talking about here. We’re talking about also, considering strategy and how sales works and sales psychology and all of that kind of thing, doing it in a way that’s in alignment with your values, your hidden sales strengths, and your business model, the kind of business that you have, all of those different things so that you can actually be making more sales.
[00:07:38] in a way that feels good for you, in a way that’s sustainable for you. And you aren’t constantly feeling like sales is the hardest part of business. You don’t even know, like, if you’re working, is it even going to pay off financially? It feels like, you know, at a job, at least, you know, if you go to work, you’re going to get a paycheck for that time.
[00:07:58] In your business, instead of feeling like you get paid a lot more than you would if you’re at a job, you feel like you don’t even know if you’re going to get paid because you don’t even know if the plans you’re following through on and the things you’re putting in your calendar are even going to convert into having clients and customers and leads and traffic and all those different things.
[00:08:17] Followers, the metrics that you have in your business that point towards sales, you don’t even know. If the things you’re working on are going to actually result in that. And of course, then it’s really hard to stay motivated. It’s much more easier, easier, easy to procrastinate, to overthink, to just get caught up in analysis, paralysis, and all those different things.
[00:08:38] So we want to have you make this shift because I just know if you resonate with what I talk about on this podcast, and especially if you’re already in my program, PGSD, This is the next work to be done. Once you release your perfectionism handbrake around taking action and you’re following through more often than not, you’re able to rely on yourself most of the time to do the things you said you would do.
[00:09:02] Then you need to release your perfectionism handbrake around sales. And I know there are so many people listening to this. I know there’s such a good chance that you specifically, you are someone who is smart, You understand, even though you have a lot of moments of confusion, you do understand marketing and sales.
[00:09:20] And like if someone else asks you for advice on those things, you’d be able to give them pretty good advice, but something’s been missing. Sales have been feeling so hard for you. And you can’t pinpoint why because you’ve invested in marketing and sales programs, but your sales are still sporadic. Like you want to be able to have predictable sales.
[00:09:40] You want to be able to feel like, you know, which buttons to push to make sales, you know, which leavers to pull that you could actually have those predictable sales coming into your business rather than feeling like you don’t even know where your next sale is going to come from. You don’t even know when someone’s going to sign up or when someone’s going to buy.
[00:09:58] It just feels like it happens so randomly or so sporadically that you have no control over it. And I don’t want you feeling out of control of sales because that is something that is in your control. You can’t necessarily control exactly which individual will buy or sign up, but you can control the sales that you create in your business.
[00:10:19] And so this shift going from self-doubt selling, which is what happens when your perfectionism handbrake is on, to self-trust selling, which is what happens as you release your perfectionism handbrake. You give yourself permission to use your hidden sales strengths. You stop trying to get it all right and do what everyone else says you should do.
[00:10:39] You actually begin listening to your inner wisdom. You’re willing to get feedback on your sales and marketing. You’re willing to debrief to do the self coaching. I’m so excited to be teaching all of that with this one on one coaching program that I’m doing to give you the exact things that you can do.
[00:10:58] They’re very simple. They’re very easy. I’ve built a business making over 2 million from self-trust selling, from doing this, from actually, even though I had so much self-doubt, so much imposter syndrome, being able to be like, okay, but I really want to have a business that feels like me, that’s aligned with me, that I actually love the way I’m building the business.
[00:11:23] I’m gonna figure that out. And I know that me trying to just follow templates exactly because of my perfectionism, that has me feeling like my business is a job that I don’t even like. Feeling like I’m having to like pass this test that I don’t even know if I want to pass because I’m having to do things that I don’t even want to do.
[00:11:47] Versus actually playing to the hidden sales strengths that I have, uncovering them, owning them, doubling down on them, getting myself back on track when my perfectionist brain wants to be like, but look what this person is doing. Or this person said you have to send this many emails at this certain time.
[00:12:02] And to just get myself back to self-trust while also trusting myself to take in wisdom and knowledge from all different places. This isn’t about. Blinders on, you never listen to what anyone says. You’re going to be upskilling. You’re going to be learning new things as you are self-trust selling, but not from this perfectionistic place of, if I get it right and perfect and do exactly what they say, then I will make sales.
[00:12:29] But really understanding that making sales comes from being convicted from trusting yourself, which means making decisions. Following through, troubleshooting, being willing to get feedback, being willing to not be overwhelmed when you see things to be improved. But actually then, identifying those, improving them, identifying what’s working, doubling down on that.
[00:12:57] This is how I have built my business. This is how I help my clients build my business, the one on one clients I’ve been working with. This is how, and we talk about it sometimes in PGSD, but it really is beyond the scope of PGSD, to be self-trust selling. Is the next step once you’re taking action, which is what Perfectionists Getting Shit Done Is there to help you with and you’ve released your perfectionism handbrake in that area of business in the productivity area Then it’s time to go to what’s next which is sales.
[00:13:28] So I want to talk. I know i’m just like chatting away But I want to share about some of the specific signs that you are self-doubt selling. So I’ve got eight of them to share with you. First of all, you’ve been busy brainstorming important business decisions for months. Things like your messaging, your niche, your one liner for your business, like the elevator pitch, what to sell, your pricing, your website, your website host, your business name.
[00:13:56] You are constantly in brainstorming mode, researching mode, learning mode. And anytime you try to even make a decision, you just end up second guessing it. Or like two days later, you see someone else doing something differently. Like, maybe I should do that instead. And whether you’ve started your business and really like the one on one coaching I’m doing is for someone who has already made some sales, you’re making sales.
[00:14:18] They’re sporadic, but you’re making them. They’re not predictable. Like you want them to be, they’re not what you know, that you could be making when it comes to sales, but you’re still getting stuck on some of those decisions. And, typically, the ones I see the most are the messaging, the niche, the one liner.
[00:14:37] The next sign is that it takes you an hour to create an Instagram post and you often don’t end up posting it at all. The next one, you feel guilty for taking time off to rest because you should be figuring out how to make more sales. Your business isn’t where it should be even though you’re posting content and doing most of the right things.
[00:14:55] Like, you feel like I’m going through the motions and the motions aren’t working to create sales. And I don’t know why. So when I’m resting, like I shouldn’t even be resting, I need to be figuring this out. I don’t want to feel behind. I want to feel proud of myself when I’m resting. I want to feel proud of the business.
[00:15:12] I want to feel like I’m actually successful in the business. So when I am resting, that should only be when I’ve actually been making more sales. You also dream about outsourcing. There’s number four, you dream about outsourcing sales and marketing to someone who actually knows what they’re doing. Number five, you’ve invested in sales and marketing programs, but your sales are still sporadic.
[00:15:34] Number six, you keep fine tuning the words on your sales page and updating your one liner so that you can finally articulate what you do and who it’s for. This is a big one that I see. And I’ve experienced this myself when you’re like, I just posting would be so much easier. Writing emails will be so much easier.
[00:15:51] Like I actually just need to know what I’m selling. And how to articulate it, or I actually just need to know who I help and how to articulate it. And then I’ll be able to figure out what to post. And then I’ll be able to figure out what to say in the email. And then I’ll be able to figure out what the pricing is.
[00:16:05] Like this desire for clarity that you never seem to be able to get. Like it’s just very, very elusive, but you want it so, so badly. Number seven is you’re worried that hitting your sales goals means you’ll be burnt out again. So you struggle to post consistently, you struggle to sell, stay motivated, or you struggle to sell wholeheartedly.
[00:16:26] Like you might be posting consistently and trying to keep yourself motivated, but you aren’t really selling Fully when you’re showing up in that post or that email or however it is you sell Because you’re a little bit worried about creating too much demand because you have burnt out before from having too many people that you’re helping or like just the way that you like to People please your clients and make sure you’re never letting them down And number eight is you want to increase your prices or offer something new, but you don’t want to let your customers down down or current customers.
[00:16:59] So you feel like you’re just stuck between a rock and a hard place. And so if you identify with any of that, there is nothing wrong with you. And I used to think like when that was all me. I used to think there was something wrong with me because I could see everyone else, especially like when I was in sales programs and marketing programs, which I’ve done a lot of, and they’re very helpful.
[00:17:25] But when I didn’t have the self-trust selling element, it just meant like, I felt like there was something wrong with me. Like, why is everyone else getting better results? Or they’re not so exhausted or like they can just get this content calendar and then they actually follow it. Like, why is that? And then I create it and I don’t follow it, or I don’t.
[00:17:44] Follow it for like a week and then I fall off because I’m just so exhausted or just like get busy with other things or like life just gets busy and I fall off. Like why is that? Because I know I’m smart. I know I’m capable. I know I have potential. And like, especially when I’ve done programs where I’m like, I feel quite aligned with what is being taught here.
[00:18:06] Like it doesn’t feel slimy or icky or sleazy or any of that. And yet I can’t get myself to do it. And it’s a self-trust selling. And so something that when I’ve been thinking about this and like, I’m just so excited to be teaching this now after, after so many years of working on this myself, I’ve documented a lot of this on the podcast.
[00:18:26] I’ve been helping clients with it as well. But something I’ve been thinking about is like, why? Didn’t I learn self-trust selling sooner? And why don’t most perfectionists know how to do that? Like, why is it in a world where there’s so much information and so many resources available, why is it that there are so, so, so, so many people So many perfectionists who are in the self-doubt selling instead of self-trust selling and this Information and knowledge that we have available to us to help empower us To make sales and like have an easier experience in business because 20 years ago There wasn’t all of these free social media platforms where you can market.
[00:19:14] There wasn’t all of these software subscription services that you have where you can just Like create it. I’m trying to think of different things. It was create a website in the click of a button Pretty much just get a template and like you had to code it all yourself Or to send out an email to lots of people you had to like literally individually send it out to them There’s so many resources.
[00:19:36] We have so many opportunities And so much information people being like, here’s literally how I did it. This is my playbook and I’m giving that to you for a price. That means you’re gonna be able to get an incredible return on investment for that. Like no matter what the price is, you will be able to make more from it than the price that you’re paying me to get this playbook.
[00:19:56] Like I figured this out through trial and error and I’m giving it to you so you can learn it in two weeks. Like that’s incredible. We are in such an incredible time. And why is it that we perfectionists are still in the self-doubt selling and not the self-trust selling? And one thing I’ve come to realize Is that the people who are creating those programs, the sales and marketing programs, where they’re like, here’s what to do, you go out and just do it.
[00:20:26] They are people who naturally were in the self-trust selling. They naturally trusted themselves to make decisions, to try things, to be in the trial and error, to put themselves out there. They’re not scared of judgment, they’re not scared of making mistakes, they’re not scared of getting it wrong, they’re not scared of failing.
[00:20:46] They are just able to be like, Oh, I had this idea. I’m going to try it. And so they didn’t have to do this work to shift from the self-doubt selling to the self-trust selling. So they aren’t then teaching it as part of what they do or they might mention mindset, but they’re not actually able to teach it in a way that really lands for a perfectionist.
[00:21:07] And so I have just been in a lot of trial and error of figuring this out, particularly for myself as a perfectionist and like learning, um, mindset work and self coaching all different things from so many different incredible places and then applying that to my perfectionist brain and also learning so many marketing strategies, sales strategies, coaching so many different kinds of entrepreneurs from so many different industries over the last five years that I’ve been coaching and bringing that all together in how to sell in a self-trusting way that actually makes sense from a strategic point of view.
[00:21:46] Perspective that isn’t just again, like, okay, just trust yourself and you can do literally anything and it will work. What we want you doing, what self-trust selling is is part of the trusting yourself is trusting yourself to figure out the strategy that works and having that actually play to your strengths.
[00:22:08] Your hidden sales strengths that you have that come naturally to you so you dismiss them Because that would be too easy to just have it be easy to sell So instead you try and get it right and like do it how everyone else is doing it versus like you The magic that’s right under your nose. It’s such a such a perfectionist thing To have incredible strengths and not see them and when someone points them out to you, you dismiss them You’re just like no, no, no.
[00:22:34] No, I have to do it this way No, no, no, this person said i’ve got to be on instagram. Oh, no. No, this person said like it’s just perfectionism 101 Is to have these hidden sales strengths And to dismiss them and to actually then end up with a marketing strategy that might make sense from a strategic perspective perspective and worked well for someone else, but because of your perfectionism handbrake and your perfectionist brain and your natural strengths and weaknesses that you have, you are basically building business on hard mode.
[00:23:11] Like you were trying to make sales on hard mode because instead of actually having a strategy that plays to your strengths, you have a strategy that actually highlights your weaknesses and dismisses and disminishes, diminishes, diminishes and ignores the strengths that you have. And so you don’t use them at all or you rarely use them or when you do use them, you’re like, Oh wait, no, no, no.
[00:23:35] But this person said this. And so you go back. To doing what you think you should be doing versus what you actually want to be doing and you intuitively know Is something that could work, but you aren’t able to trust yourself Enough to follow through with it for long enough to actually get it working So if you are in self-doubt selling If you’re in the questioning the second guessing if you feel like you don’t know when the next sale is coming But it should be coming because you’re posting and you’re doing the different things and like you feel like you’re doing it right and you’re Following through with your plans for the most part You might still have your perfectionism handbrake coming a little bit when it comes to Taking action, but for the most part that’s not your struggle anymore.
[00:24:20] But selling is You don’t like selling you don’t feel like you’re good at selling. There’s also money mindset stuff going on with pricing. You don’t want to increase your prices and let anyone down or not be as accessible as you want to be, which is an important value to you. So might be stuff going on like that, or you actually don’t trust yourself with large sums of money.
[00:24:44] You’re worried that you’re going to spend it and overspend it, or it just feels really damn uncomfortable. And you feel bad if you receive money, especially large amounts of money easily for something that you enjoy doing. This is one of the big things for me that when I was an accountant, like, yeah, I should be getting paid for that because I wouldn’t be doing that for free.
[00:25:09] But then when I started coaching, I was like, but I would and am doing this for free. So I shouldn’t get paid for it because getting paid is compensation for doing something you don’t like. Like that was how I thought about money and what getting paid was about. And so that meant that I wasn’t getting paid and I wasn’t selling came really easily to me, was really natural for me to do, but I was trying to do all these other things instead and make money in all these other ways.
[00:25:41] Pinterest consulting, ghostwriting, those things were still relatively easy for me, but they weren’t the thing that I wanted to be doing. I was just so scared to find out that I wasn’t as good at coaching as I thought I would be. It was so scary to sell it. It was a vulnerable act to do that. Because what if people actually see that I’m not as naturally talented as I think I am.
[00:26:04] That’s such a big perfectionist fear. It’s so common, especially among artists, creators, writers, this fear of like, if I’m actually doing the thing I want to be doing, and especially if I’m then selling that in a way that feels really easy and aligned for me, then it’s just going to be the most painful experience when people, I don’t have happy customers.
[00:26:27] They want a refund. Or they’re leaving hate comments. And here I am in ease and being fully self expressed and people don’t like it. So we tend to end up selling things we don’t even really want to sell. As in like different versions of what we could be doing. We aren’t doing the actual thing we want to be doing oftentimes, or if we are, we aren’t selling it in the easiest way that we could be because it feels so uncomfortable to be getting paid well, to do something that just feels easy and that you’d probably be willing to do for free happily.
[00:26:59] You enjoy it. So we overcomplicate the business. So what you might do is like, you need this now fancy sales funnel to be able to get any sales. You need to have it be a webinar. And then it goes to this email sequence with this upsell, this downsell, integrating 10 different software platforms to make it work because it feels so uncomfortable to just receive money easily and simply for something that you love doing.
[00:27:27] It’s so common or you might find yourself procrastinating on tasks like you actually You can get shit done But you don’t because then you just get your work done quickly and easily that would be too uncomfortable So instead, you procrastinate, or you spend a lot of time on the productive procrastination, so you might be actually working.
[00:27:49] But, say for example, if it’s a sales page, instead of that taking you 2 hours, it takes you 8 hours, or it takes you 14 hours. So that you do have to work really long hours. so that you do feel deserving of the money because you’re working really hard and others can say, oh yeah, you work really hard. Of course you deserve to be successful.
[00:28:09] So there’s all of that as well. So in my one on one coaching program, we are going to specifically be working on your money mindset as well so that you can receive amounts of money for doing things that come easily to you. You can trust yourself with that money to manage it well, to not overspend it. If you have any shame about your finances as well, any money mistakes, any bad habits, any less than ideal sales results, it’s such a safe space as well.
[00:28:39] This is one of my favorite things about being able to offer this and like actually have it, have something that I have available to help you with this because up until now it’s really just been helping perfectionists release their perfectionism handbrake around taking action. Because for me, like, that was the first thing in my business I had to figure out.
[00:28:59] I couldn’t do this sales stuff and this sales work with my perfectionism until I was actually showing up. Until I was actually posting on my blog more than once every three months. But once I had that down, then it was like, okay, and now I have to figure out how to release my perfectionism hair break around sales.
[00:29:21] And working together with me one on one Means that it’s just such a safe place and space for you If you are feeling like you have shame around your finances and how you’ve been managing money or any credit card debt or like Anything like that Do you have a place? Judgment free i’m never gonna judge you Judgment free.
[00:29:42] You have a place to share about that, to get support with that, to emotionally process that, to have a plan to get out of that, one that you can actually follow. It’s so powerful and it’s such a big piece of it, too. So knowing that there’s a self-trust selling and moving out of the self-doubt selling simultaneously, and this work, it’s not hard to do.
[00:30:06] It’s simple and easy when you know how, especially when you have personal support and guidance all along the way. But when it comes to that, it’s also having, doing this Money Mindset work simultaneously. Cleaning up, cleaning up your thinking about money so that you can receive money for doing things that are easy so that you don’t overspend it.
[00:30:28] And mismanage it or end up in all these different shame spirals that perfectionists can end up in about money and just actually have Sales coming in, more money in your bank account and trusting yourself with that more money too. That’s so important for me for like What I want to contribute to in the world isn’t just like you make more sales, but then like that doesn’t actually Translate to you having financial freedom.
[00:30:55] I think a really important part of making more sales Is having that translate across to you being able to support your family to rely on yourself financially to have a great relationship with money To be a really good steward of your money You And not being like perfect around money and like living by the standards of like, you should never have debt because in, in business, debt is something that is strategic.
[00:31:20] It’s leveraging money, like paying a little bit of money for more money so that you can leverage that into something else, into more money, into opportunities, into longer term things that will make you money. So I’m not saying like, we want to have you buying into all of the societal beliefs about like what it means to be good with money.
[00:31:38] But like as an entrepreneur, That you are really able to take care of your money well, in a strategic way. I’ve learned so many lessons on that. I love teaching that. And especially for perfectionists, we really have to do the money mindset work. in a different way because perfectionists are very prone to shame, highly prone to shame.
[00:32:00] And also the all or nothing mindset can really play havoc when it comes to money. And so that just needs to be taken into account. And so I love sharing about that, teaching about that, supporting about that as well so that you’re making more money and you’re keeping it. You’re not then just creating this mess to clean up behind you.
[00:32:19] So I hope it helps to just hear The self-trust selling, self-doubt selling. If you are in that self-doubt selling, you want to be in self-trust selling. You want to be able to trust yourself to have an aligned marketing strategy, a self-trust sales strategy that actually feels good, that plays to your strengths.
